94th Regiment of foot Pioneer
Brief info
Join our local lad and Pioneering Sergeant Joseph Donaldson and hear about the history of his current regiment from being formed as the Scotch brigade to becoming the 94th Regiment of foot in the 19th Century.
Hear about the roles of the Pioneers such as being 1st up in the morning out of all of the regiments to light all the fires heating the water for cooking, washing, shaving etc. Hear how when everything was lit, they would then set off into enemy territory, preparing the ground ahead for the rest of the army. Learn about how to lay suppressing fire with their carbines and how were supported by the light companies or dragoons, who would provide the pioneers with cover to do their jobs.
Hear about the recruiting Sergeants and how they would check the teeth of children. If the children didn’t have any, they wouldn’t be chosen as they couldn’t ‘bite the bullet’
See whether you would like to join the Pioneers, learning how to build the defensive positions for the camps or deciding to attack as it would be the you as a pioneer who would work out how the whole army were going to attack the enemies’ position e.g. artillery, frontal assault, sneak behind etc.
Activities – Marching or ‘sneaking’. Q&A on 19th century army rations and musket firing. Weapons handling (when and where appropriate). Black powder firing if appropriate. Teeth checking to see it you can ‘bite the bullet’
