17th Century plague doctor
Brief info

Join our 17th century plague doctor; George Ray who wasn't actually a doctor. Find out how he took over the job after Dr John Paulitious died from the plague in June 1645 and was promised £100 a month from the city council, payable after he had eradicated the plague from the city. Learn how the council weren't expecting George to survive; which he did and how the council took over a decade to pay him the money that he was due!
George Rae’s presentation talks about medicine throughout Scotland's history, rather than being limited to talking about the plague. The display would cover medicine from the Iron age through to the modern day, investigating how the fundamentals have evolved over the past thousand years.
Activities – A Q&A session about the tools and equipment that George is using. Learn about some of the healing plants in the area and see if you can find them yourself.
